Expert Home Physiotherapy for Knee Pain
Knee pain can affect everything from walking and climbing stairs to kneeling, exercising, and staying independent. As a weight-bearing joint, the knee is under constant demand, so problems here have a big impact on daily life and activity levels. At Warwickshire Home Physio, we assess and treat knee pain in your own home, working out what is causing it and creating a personalised plan to reduce pain and rebuild strength and confidence.
Our physiotherapists are regulated by the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy and registered with the HCPC. From sporting injuries to age-related wear, we have the experience to support knee problems of all kinds.
What Is Knee Pain?
Knee pain is discomfort in or around the knee joint, where the thigh bone, shin bone, and kneecap meet. The joint is supported by strong ligaments, cushioned by cartilage, and powered by the large muscles of the leg. Pain can arise from any of these structures, or be referred from the hip or foot.
Many knee problems are linked to how the joint is loaded and how well the surrounding muscles support it, which is why exercise-based rehabilitation is so effective. Whether your pain came on suddenly or built up gradually, understanding the cause is the foundation of a successful recovery.
Common Symptoms
- Pain at the front of the knee, especially when climbing stairs, squatting, or sitting for long periods
- Swelling, stiffness, or a feeling of warmth around the joint
- Difficulty fully straightening or bending the knee
- Difficulty getting on and off the floor
- A sense of the knee giving way, locking, or feeling unstable
- Clicking, grinding, or catching during movement
Common Causes of Neck Pain
The knee can be affected by a wide range of conditions, from gradual overload to acute injury. Pinpointing the cause allows us to target treatment effectively and set realistic goals.
- Anterior knee pain, a common cause of patellofemoral pain, closely related to how the kneecap moves
- Osteoarthritis, where the cartilage gradually wears, leading to pain and stiffness
- Ligament injuries, such as to the ACL or other ligaments, often from twisting or sporting incidents
- Meniscal or cartilage problems, which can cause locking, catching, or swelling
- Tendon problems around the knee, frequently linked to a rapid increase in activity
How Home Physiotherapy Helps Knee Pain
Physiotherapy is the recommended first-line treatment for most knee conditions, including osteoarthritis, patellofemoral pain, and ligament and tendon problems. Strengthening the muscles that support the knee, improving how the joint moves, and gradually building tolerance to activity are all proven to reduce pain and improve function.
Even if you are considering surgery in the future – we can ensure youโre going into that as strong and healthy as you can be, giving surgery to best chance at being successful; a process we call โprehabโ.
Through our home physiotherapy service, we assess and treat your knee in your own home, where we can see how you manage stairs, chairs, and everyday movement. Your programme will be built around progressive strengthening and movement retraining, supported by hands-on treatment where helpful, and adapted to the space and equipment you have available.
For sporting knee injuries or a return to running and training, our sports rehabilitation expertise guides a structured, confident return to activity. See our sports injury rehab service page for more on sport-related knee injuries.
What to Expect From Your Assessment
At your first appointment, we take a thorough history of your knee pain, including how it started, what aggravates it, and what you want to get back to. We then assess the knee hands-on, looking at its movement, stability, and strength, and checking the hip and ankle too, since these influence how the knee functions.
We explain and discuss all of our findings, and agree a personalised treatment plan with you. You will usually begin some tailored exercises immediately and leave with a clear understanding of your condition. As your strength and comfort improve, we progress your programme to keep moving you towards your goals.
